He has been companions with kindred English vocalist, Passenger, since he was 15, with the two playing on the same gig in Cambridge. He moved to London in 2008, and began playing in small settings. In the autumn of 2009, Sheeran began contemplating music at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford, Surrey as an undergraduate, however it isn't clear to what extent he remained at the school.
Sheeran began to be seen by more individuals over the web through YouTube and his fan-base developed, with him also getting credit from The Independent newspaper, England football captain Rio Ferdinand and Elton John. He played a Station Session in St. Pancras International in June 2010. The scene is unavailable from the official Station Sessions channel. Sheeran also self-released two other EPs in 2010, Ed Sheeran: Live at the Bedford and Songs I Wrote with Amy, which is an accumulation of adoration tunes he wrote in Wales with artist, Amy Wadge.
On 8 January 2011, Sheeran released another autonomous EP, No. 5 Collaborations Project, featuring grime artists, for example, Wiley, Jme, Devlin, Sway and Ghetts. With this EP, Sheeran gained mainstream attention for reaching number 2 in the iTunes chart with no advancement or label, offering more than 7,000 duplicates in its first week. Three months later, Sheeran put on a free show to fans at the Barfly in Camden Town. More than 1,000 fans turned up, so Sheeran played four unique shows to guarantee everybody saw a gig, including a gig outside in the city after the setting had shut. Later that month, Sheeran was marked to Asylum Records.
